| Nym is much happier in my lap |
Since I can't bring everyone up to date on everything in my life up to this moment, I suppose I will begin my personal news blog with my current status and how I got here. Believe it or not, about twenty days ago I packed up as much of my life as would fit into my silver Buick Century and moved from Indianapolis, Indiana to Galveston, Texas (in one marathon 18-hour car ride, might I add). Tim West helped me drive and my kitty, Nym turned out to behave herself much better out of her cage than in it, so she rode most of the way on the passenger's lap or under the passenger's seat, poor thing. The drive itself was fairly uneventful. A dog at a filling station near the border of Missouri decided I was his best friend and he was going to love all over me until I had the proper amount of mud on me from his fur. We only took a wrong turn once, on the winding bypasses and confusing exits around Little Rock. Sorry, Arkansas, there is just nothing in you but that city. We joked that Arkansas had no imagination because the names of the towns we passed through in that state were so inane- they were just mash ups of different place names (Arkadelphia- REALLY!?).

But my favorite name of a place we passed through comes from Illinois: Effingham. If you want to better understand why, listen to this Ben Folds song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjJa7BYCiiA . (Parents/grandparents if you're reading this it's really just funny, not cursing or anything, K?)

Anyway, After getting here it's really been a whirlwind of moving in, getting furniture, and applying for jobs and all so I'm really sorry that I haven't updated everyone I should have on my progress. Tim and I got my room set up fairly quickly, with furniture help from my very good friend David Briley, and my new friend Malaney O'Connell. My house is a beautiful light blue Victorian style home with all wood floors and an upstairs porch I can't wait to sit out on in the summer. Really though, the weather has been gorgeous so far. Barely under fifty at any time and in the seventies some days. Overall, getting the house together was not hard for me, but I did have an adventure trying to get my mattress from a discounter about thirty miles away on the mainland. We had to strap it to the top of Tim's SUV and we discovered that there's a trick to keeping a mattress from flying away while strapped to the top of a moving vehicle. It's all in how you tie it down. Reference this illustration:

After the moving in was finished, it was time to find a job so I can pay the rent in this fabulous new place I'm living in. And I'm pleased to report that I have found not one, but TWO! This was my original plan, I'm just glad it's happened fairly quickly. First of all, I'll be doing part time work at the Galveston Grand Opera House, which serves as a venue for all sorts of traveling entertainment nowadays. I'll be doing backstage help, loading in and out visiting shows, doing wardrobe and dressing for the ones that need it, and my name has even been sent to Houston for work with any theaters that need stage hands up there! I worked on Sunday and had a lot of fun. The theater people are essentially the same no matter where you go so I felt right at home among them! Second, I've been offered a position on the front desk at one of Galveston's oldest hotels, Hotel Galvez. It's pretty famous, being featured on reality TV when stars come to stay, and even Ghost Hunters, for its reported haunting. I'll be doing front desk, reservations or phone services for them, and I have to wait to find out which. It should be some nice steady money since they'd like me to work 30-40 hours a week. I just hope they'll be flexible for scheduling around the theater jobs!

Apart from all this interviewing and spending of money on furniture I've been doing, I've been hanging out with new and old friends, trying desperately to fix an ailing computer, and trying to come to terms with how much my life has changed in the past three weeks! Hopefully once I get a regular schedule going I'll be able to feel a little more settled down. I'm really happy and excited to be here, but it's a big change and I just haven't quite gotten used to it yet.
Well friends, I'll try to update you every week or two on here about what I'm up to and how things are going. Please forgive me, I was never good at keeping a journal or anything so the posts will most likely be sporadic, but I will do my best. Take care all, until next time!
